Mid-Point of the South West Coast Path
Halfway? Not even a quarter!
The South West Coast Path is 630 miles long. This stone slab in Porthallow, inscribed with the names of flora and fauna to be seen along the way, marks the halfway point. My aim is to go further, all the way around the edge of England: about 3,000 miles, of which I had walked just less than one quarter when I reached this marker.

Der South West Coast Path ist 1034 km lang. Den Mittelpunkt in Porthallow markiert diese Stele. Sie trägt die Namen von Pflanzen und Tieren, denen man unterwegs begegnen kann. Mein Ziel: viel weiter zu wandern, ganz um England herum, d.h. ca. 5000 km. Für mich markiert dieser "Mittelpunkt" knapp ein Viertel der geplanten Strecke.

Crossing Gillan Creek
The non-existent stepping stones
"Stepping stones magically appear", said the guidebook, if you arrive at Gillan Creek one hour before or after low tide. I hiked fast and arrived at the right time. The magic failed to work. With two other exasperated walkers, I took off my boots and waded carefully barefoot through shallow water, across slippery mud and seaweed.
Der gedruckte Wanderführer berichtet von der „magischen Erscheinung von Trittsteinen“, erreicht man den Gillan Creek bei Niedrigwasser bzw. eine Stunde vorher oder nachher. Ich machte Tempo und kam rechtzeitig an, die Magie versagte aber. Zusammen mit zwei anderen verärgerten Wanderern zog ich die Schuhe aus und konnte durch seichtes Wasser waten, ohne auf Schlamm und glitschige Algen auszurutschen.

The King's Pipe
The King's Pipe is a furnace with a brick chimney and a stone base, built in about 1814, for burning smuggled tobacco that had been confiscated by customs officers.
„Des Königs Pfeife“ – ein Ofen mit Ziegelkamin aus der Zeit um 1814. Von Zöllnern beschlagnahmter Schmugglertabak wurde hier verbrannt.
