Lizard Point and Lighthouse
Lizard Point, now a tourist attraction with a café for visitors to the southernmost point in mainland England.

The signal station for Lloyd's of London insurance, built in 1872 to monitor shipping, stands at Bass Point, a little to the east of Lizard Point. The National Coastwatch station nearby does valuable work: a coaster taking coal from Swansea to Rouen sank off Lizard Point in 30-foot waves in 1962. The bodies of the 12 crew members were never found.
Am Bass Point nahe Lizard Point, überwacht seit 1872 eine Station der Versicherung Lloyd’s of London den Schiffsverkehr. Die benachbarte Hütte der National Coastwatch hat eine wichtige Aufgabe an dieser gefährlichen Küste. 1962 kenterte in 10 Meter hohen Wellen vor dem Lizard Point ein mit Kohle aus Wales beladenes Frachtschiff. Die Leichen der 12-köpfigen Besatzung wurden nie geborgen.
Lizard Lifeboat Station
A funicular takes the lifeboatmen down from the building at the top down to the new lifeboat station. The biggest rescue ever made by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was to take 456 passengers from the ocean liner SS Suevic in 1907. On its voyage from Australia to Liverpool, the Suevic ran into dense fog and ran aground in rough seas on a reef off Lizard Point. Crews of five lifeboats rowed to and fro for 16 hours to complete the rescue. The Suevic was later dynamited to separate the undamaged stern from the rest, fitted with a new bow in Southampton, took British troops to the Dardenelles in the First World War, was sold to Norway in 1928 and finally scuttled off the Swedish coast by its crew in the face of German warships in 1942.
Mit einer Seilbahn erreicht man das neue Bootshaus. An dieser Küste ereignete sich 1907 die größte Rettungsaktion der Royal National Lifeboat Institution, als 456 Passagiere vom Ozeandampfer SS Suevic evakuiert wurden. Auf der Fahrt von Australien nach Liverpool lief die Suevic bei dichtem Nebel auf ein Riff vor Lizard Point. Fünf Rettungsmannschaften ruderten 16 Stunden lang hin und her.
Später sprengte man die Suevic in zwei Teile, denn das Heck war unbeschadet geblieben. In Southampton wurde ein neuer Bug angeschweißt, so dass die Suevic im Ersten Weltkrieg zum Einsatz kommen konnte. 1928 wechselte sie in norwegischen Besitz und wurde 1942 von der eigenen Mannschaft versenkt, als sich deutsche Kriegsschiffe näherten.

Not spectacular in calm weather when I walked past, but a boiling cauldron at high tide on stormy days, 60 metres below the coast path.

Cadgwith
This small port is famous for the huge number of pilchards caught by its boats in the 19th and early 20th century. The record catch was 1.3 million pilchards in a single day. the stone hut above the bay was a huer's hut, used as a lookout for spotting shoals of fish (see Newquay, day 44).
Bekannt wurde der kleine Hafen für die riesigen Mengen an pilchards (junge Sardinen), die im 19. und im frühen 20. Jh. von hier aus gefangen wurden. Bestmarke: 1,3 Millionen an einem einzigen Tag. Die steinerne Hütte oberhalb der Bucht diente als Ausguck für den huer, der Ausschau nach Fischschwärmen hielt (s. Tag 44, Newquay).
