64 Polruan to Looe

A rough and wonderful clifftop hike linking three picture-postcard Cornish towns - Polruan, Polperro and Looe.

The route, day 64

The Southwest Coast Path all day.

Narrow streets, helpful regulars in the pub

The signs are clear enough at the top of this steep lane leading down to the centre of Polruan, where the streets are even narrower than here. However, a local man who joined us in a bus shelter, where we had found cover from pouring rain, had a good story to tell. An Italian drove down the hill with his caravan and got completely stuck, blocking the village streets. Drinkers in the Lugger Inn put down their pints and manhandled the caravan into a position from where it could be towed out of Polruan again.
Sorry to have missed this spectacle, on a Saturday morning, changeover time for holiday apartments, we did see visitors struggling to reach their accommodation by car - men looking anxious at the wheel, women standing next to a pile of luggage and awaiting their arrival.
