Port Quin
No more than a handful of stone cottages and converted fish cellars, owned by the National Trust. Long ago the village lived from trade and pilchard fishing. Granite from Lundy Island was landed here in the 15th century to build the church of St Endellion in the hinterland.
Sea kayakers who set out from Port Quin can warm up after their trip in a top-class spa.
Doyden Castle
The National Trust is a wonderful organisation, so I’m pleased to provide a bit of free advertising for their holiday apartment. Actually it’s called a castle. Doyden Castle was built in about 1830 by Samuel Symons, a notoriously debauched businessman from Wadebridge, as a place for private drinking, gambling and whatever else with a stunning view. An Iron-Age Fort at Rumps Point
Between the 4th century BC and the 1st century AD there was a settlement on the headland. Three ramparts, visible in this photo, defended it. Wooden bridges spanned ditches, and there was a gatehouse made of timber that was rebuilt in stone. Within the compound, traces of roundhouses were found. The discovery of an amphora shows trading links to the Mediterranean 2,000 years ago.
Vom 4. Jh. v. Chr. bis zum 1. Jh. n. Chr. war die Landzunge besiedelt. Drei auf diesem Bild sichtbare Erdwälle dienten der Verteidigung. Brücken aus Holz führten über Gräben, ein hölzernes, später steinernes Torhaus sicherte den Zugang. Archäologen fanden Spuren von kreisförmigen Hütten und eine Amphore, die auf Handelsbeziehungen zum Mittelmeerraum vor 2000 Jahren deutet.
For the Fallen

In 1914, sitting on these cliffs near Pentire Point with a view back to The Rumps, Laurence Binyon wrote the poem For the Fallen, from which the above well-known lines are often quoted in commemorations of the First and Second World Wars.

Polzeath
St Enodoc's Church
St Enodoc was an early Christian saint, probably from Wales. There is a tradition that he lived as a hermit on this site, possibly dying in about 520.
Der frühchristliche Heilige Enodoc kam wahrscheinlich aus Wales und starb um das Jahr 520. Laut Überlieferung lebte er als Eremit an dieser Stelle.
2 The church lies in the middle of a golf course, surrounded by a tamarisk hedge to keep sand out of the graveyard, and is approached by a path across the 10th fairway.

1 The church with its stumpy bent spire was buried in sand for decades, until it was dug out and restored in 1863. To keep the right to collect tithes, services had to be held. For this purpose, the vicar and congregation were lowered inside through a hole in the roof.
Jahrzehntelang war die Kirche mit ihrem krummen, stumpfen Turm metertief im Sand verschüttet. 1863 wurde das Gottteshaus befreit und restauriert. Vorher, um den Gottesdienst abzuhalten und somit das Recht auf Zehnteinnahmen zu sichern, mussten Pfarrer und Gläubige durch ein Loch im Dach hinuntergelassen werden.
Sir John Betjeman, Poet Laureate, 1906–1984
Betjeman loved Cornwall and he loved churches. St Enodoc's Church is an especially loveable one. Betjeman wrote about his childhood holidays in Cornwall in his verse autobiography and had a house near this church in Trebetherick in the last years of his life.

At low tide, the expanse of sand in the estuary is bigger than the expanse of water, and passengers from Rock board from a sandbank.
Seafood? Or ice-cream with lots of sea salt?
Padstow is firmly in the hands of Rick Stein, the chef credited with reviving the art of cooking seafood in England. He runs a fine-dining restaurant, a bistro, a fish-and-chip shop, a fish shop and a cookery school there. The fish and chips were good.
A second big presence in the town were Kelly's ice-cream vans, causing a traffic jam in the narrow lanes and venturing onto the beach at Polzeath. A few days after I left Cornwall, a Kelly's van made news headlines when the driver was ambushed by the incoming tide nearby at Harlyn, which produced some entertaining pictures in the media, e.g. here and here.
Fisch, Meeresfrüchte? Oder lieber Eis mit ganz viel Meersalz?
Der Koch Rick Stein, dem bescheinigt wird, die in England lange vernachlässigte Zubereitung von Fisch und Meeresfrüchten wiederbelebt zu haben, hält Padstow fest im Griff. Hier führt er ein Gourmetrestaurant, ein Bistro, einen Fish-and-Chips-Laden, ein Fischgeschäft und eine Kochschule. Seine Fish and Chips waren sehr gut.
Eine zweite starke Präsenz zeigen die mobilen Eisverkäufer von Kelly Whip. Sie verstopfen die engen Gassen von Padstow und fahren auf die Strände, z.B. in Polzeath, s. Bild. Im nahe gelegenen Harlyn sorgte ein Kelly-Mobil kurz nach meiner Abreise für Schlagzeilen. Der Van eines unaufmerksamen Fahrers wurde ins Meer geschwemmt, Bilder in den Medien (Links oben) sorgten für Unterhaltung.

Most of the photos of Rumps Point, Polzeath, St Enodoc's Church, the Rock ferry and Padstow were taken in 2024, when I had to do a there-and-back walk between Padstow and Rumps Point, as no accommodation was available in Port Isaac and the bus service was suspended. This left a two-day gap in the walk: Tintagel to Port Isaac, Port Isaac to Padstow. I closed the gap in 2025.
