Saint Petroc
St Petroc is a patron saint of Cornwall alongside St Piran. As two Lives of St Petroc were written in the Middle Ages, we have a lot of (dubious) information about him. The sources say that he was born into a noble Welsh family in the 6th century, studied in Ireland, and came to south-west England to preach the gospel. The winds and tides took him to the Camel estuary, and he established a monastery in the place now named after him: Petrocstowe, meaning Petroc's place, a name that morphed into Padstow.
He is said to have converted the Celtic Cornish king Constantine to Christianity when Constantine was hunting a deer. Petroc is often depicted with a deer, as in the east window of the church (see photo). Nothing remains of the 6th-century church. The lower part of the tower dates from the 12th, the rest of the church from the mid-15th century.
Petroc ist der Schutzpatron von Cornwall. Zwei verschiedene Vitae des Heiligen aus dem Mittelalter geben umfangreiche und unzuverlässige Auskunft über ihn. Es heißt, er kam als Sproß einer adligen Familie in Wales im 6. Jh. zur Welt, studierte in Irland and kam als Missionar nach Südwestengland. Strömung und Wind führten ihn zur Mündung des Camel, wo er ein Kloster gründete. Dieser Ort erhielt seinen Namen: Petrocstowe, heute Padstow.
Petroc soll bei der Jagd einen keltischen König namens Constantine zum Christentum bekehrt haben und wird deshalb oft mit einem Reh dargestellt – wie im Foto des Kirchenfensters. Von der Kirche des 6. Jh. steht nichts mehr. Das Erdgeschoss des Turms stammt aus dem 12., die anderen Teile der Kirche aus dem 15. Jh.
The house of the local landowning family, Prideaux Place, was built in the 16th century by Sir Nicholas Prideaux, who is commemorated in St Petroc's Church on this monument, with his wife and four sons.
Das Epitaph für Sir Nicholas Prideaux stellt ihn mit Ehefrau und seinen vier Söhnen dar. Er ließ im 16. Jh. den noch bestehenden Familiensitz Prideaux Place am Stadtrand von Padstow errichten.
In the moist, pure air on the coasts of south-west England, moss and lichen thrive on gravestones, creating chance works of art on the local stone. These are two stones of the Sloggett family in the churchyard of St Petroc's.

Along the Camel Estuary
The sand bar at the mouth of the Camel estuary has earned its name Doom Bar: more than 600 vessels have been beached or wrecked on it since the early 19th century, when it was on the north side of the river mouth and ships had to navigate between the bar and the cliffs of Stepper Point. The original name was "dune bar". The legend about a mermaid who was shot by a local man and created the sand bar in revenge has been retold in poetry many times. Now Doom Bar is the name of an excellent local beer from Sharp's Brewery.
Die Sandbank an der Mündung des River Camel hat mit gutem Grund den Namen "Doom Bar" – "Schicksalsbank". Seit dem frühen 19. Jh. sind mehr als 600 Boote und Schiffe hier auf Grund gelaufen, viele davon gingen verloren. Diese Untiefe lag einst auf der Nordseite der Mündung, so dass Schiffe in die schmale Fahrrinne zwischen den Felsen des Stepper Point und der Sandbank hineinfinden mussten. Lieder und Gedichte berichten von einer Meerjungfrau, die von einem Mann aus Padstow erschossen wurde. Aus Rache erschuf sie die Sandbank. Eine empfehlenswerte Biersorte der lokalen Brauerei Sharp's trägt den Namen Doom Bar.

The Daymark Tower
The tower was built on Stepper Point in the early 19th century as an aid to navigation for ships entering the Camel estuary.
An der Landzunge Stepper Point entstand Anfang des 19. Jhs. dieser Turm, um Schiffen den Weg in die Fahrrinne am River Camel zu zeigen.

Trevone Round Hole
In the headland north of Trevone beach there is an unfenced circular hole, about 80 feet (25 m) in diameter and equally deep. Erosion by waves through a sea cave and the collapse of the rocks above this have formed the hole. Older locals report that it used to be a blowhole, from which water spouted at high tide, and that they used to slide down the sides and go out to the sea through the cave. Incautious humans and dogs have been injured and killed in the hole in recent years.
An der Landzunge nördlich der Bucht von Trevone klafft ein rundes, 25m tiefes und ebenso breites Loch ohne Umfassungszaun. Seine Entstehung wird auf Aushöhlung der Klippe durch Wellen und den Zusammenbruch unten liegender Steinschichten zurückgeführt. Ältere Anwohner berichtet, dass früher Wasserfontänen bei Flut hochspritzten, und dass sie früher hinunterrutschen und durch eine Höhle zum Meer hinaus gelangen konnten. In den letzten Jahren haben unvorsichtige Menschen und Hunde sich hier verletzt oder sind in den Tod gestürzt.
